Lou Glorie (catherineglorie at comcast dot net - spam prevention) is working with a couple of other artists on finding funding and there are a couple potential sources.
Here is part of an email she sent to Ron Suarez (A3Roots):
We are envisioning this parcel with studio and events space, a sculputure garden/park'gathering space (alongside the eventual greenway). This could become one of the most used and appreciated parks in Ann Arbor. The Building may or may not be solid. I have a qualified contracter who can give me that info once he can gain entry, though he believes the structure is solid. It does, however need mechanical updating ( we'll need lot's of money for this) and there may be a brownfield area(actually a good thing for funding, maybe) that would need clean-up. With all the engineered detractions to our proposal, no one has bothered to actually read the resolution which did include "community use" in the language.
If Ann Arbor is to continue to be viewed as a "cool city", space must be made available for artist's studios and exhibition. Ann Arbor is losing its artist community to Ypsilanti, where affordable studio space has drawn them away from Ann Arbor. With high-end downtown living and suburban housing surrounding the city, no space has been left in Ann Arbor for artists to live and work.
If the city is unable to finance what should be considered a necessity to a community, hopefully there are funders in the private sector who appreciate the need to promote a local arts community.
Lou Glorie has her hands full with several other projects that she is commited to....she's a go-getter with all the right intentions. But she needs others to join with her to make this concept more than merely a good idea. Anyone who has time to offer should contact Lou.
