the beginnings of grassroots planning in Ann Arbor Ward 1

comments that were made at the get-together of 1st-Ward Dems 4-6pm Sunday, Dec. 12, 2004 at Zingerman's (those present were John Minderhout, Tui Minderhout, Ron Suarez and Kathy Stroud)

Thoughts about canvassing: --We should start canvassing right away and try to keep it up on a weekly basis. --We should thank voters for the great turnout. --We should offer potential volunteers a wide range of levels of involvement. (We should keep our own local databases on this, probably in an open-acess format on a website.) ------Canvassing questions should be more open-ended, so people can feel like they were heard out. (We'll worry about coding the data later.) --We should also "bring something to the door," i.e. not just ask people things, but have information for them as well, about local political issues (e.g. permit sparking in the neighborhoods near campus) or upcoming events (e.g. the townhall meetings that are foreseen in the grassroots platform that was drawn up for the recent election of local party officers). --Some kind of handout should be developed with contact info. --We could put on parties with refreshments and charge admission, at places such as Hathaway's Hideaway on Ashley)

Other questions raised and comments made that apply more broadly than the precinct: --How to handle local finances, and how transparent is it? (The comment was made that the higher levels of the party are not necessarily interested in promoting the grassroots.) --How does one get a list of registered Dems? --What is happening in the Ann Arbor Party?
